About the project...

The goal behind this sub-project managed by Emeritus Professor François Feral of the Université de Perpignan Via Domitia is to document the legal pluralism phenomenon in New Caledonia in the context of the transformation of French State law during the slow decolonization of a non-independent territory.

This sub-project has several objectives:

  • Track and document the building, acceleration, and institutionalization of indigenous judicialisation in New Caledonia since October 2012;
  • Provide legal assistance to the stakeholders in the Indigenous Project in New Caledonia at the legal engineering and comparative law levels;
  • Supply new material to the Legitimus project in the form of the innovative and atypical experience of the Kanak claim engaged in the "Noumea process" and, in particular, complement the knowledge and experience gleaned from other legal systems and contexts in the American, African and Pacific continents.
