FIRST INTEGRATION REORT ON CUSTOMARY MARRIAGE IN YATÉ, NEW CALEDONIA

Published on:02 December at 04:00PM
Author:François Féral and Anne-Lise Madinier

The team led by Professor François Féral prepared the first integration report that presents the marriage in the customary Kanak society in the region of Yaté in New Caledonia.

The research questions are:

• How does legal pluralism in New Caledonia manifest itself in relation to matrimonial practices? what is recognized by the State and the Kanak community with regards to the customary marriage?

• How do the Kanaks marry and are the practices identical to oral traditions, community, and clan memories? do practices manifest as drawn by Western anthropologists and lawyers?

The Field researches were conducted mainly by the local partners’ representatives in the New Caledonian, the Sénat Coutumier de la Nouvelle Calédonie and the representatives of the Conseil National des Droits du Peuple Autochtone de Kanaky-NC.

The research report is available here (in French):
